Abiding in the Vine - Jacob the Righteous Branch: Part 9 of 13

Preview: This is the ninth part in a thirteen-part series of lessons on this subject.


Scripture Reading: Genesis 27:1-25.

Memory Verse: Genesis 25:23.

1. Discuss Rebekah and Jacob’s deceptive actions from the Scripture Reading and Memory Verse.
Note: Before Jacob and Esau were born, God revealed to Rebekah that Jacob would receive the blessing. She was not content to wait on the Lord to bring it to pass.
2. What was the blessing that Isaac received from his father Abraham and passed on to his son? Genesis 27:26-29.
3. How do we know that this was the Abrahamic covenant? Genesis 12:1-3.
Note: Esau’s birthright was his position of wealth and authority in the family because he was the oldest. He had already sold his birthright to Jacob for a bowl of soup. The blessing that his brother stole through deception was God’s promise to his grandfather Abraham that was to be passed on from one generation to the next until it was fulfilled. God had already promised it to Jacob, but his mother decided that God needed her help to fulfill the promise.
4. What was the sad result of her action? Genesis 27:30-37 & Genesis 27:41.
5. What did Rebekah do when she learned of Esau’s threat to kill Jacob? Genesis 27:42-46.
Note: Rebekah had instigated the deception and created the hate that Esau felt toward his brother. Now she was losing her favorite son, never to see him again.
6. What instructions did his father give him? Genesis 28:1-5.
7. How did God affirm the Abrahamic covenant to Jacob? Genesis 28:10-16.
Note: In spite of Jacob’s deception to his father, God honored His covenant with Abraham, and the righteous branch continues.
8. How did Jacob learn that we reap what we sow? Genesis 29:1-6, Genesis 29:13, Genesis 29:15-20 & Genesis 29:23-26.
9. How did his uncle offer to make amends? Genesis 29:27-30.
Note: For a complete understanding of his uncle’s cunning deception, and the effect on Jacob’s life, read chapters 30-31. Even though God was faithful to His promise to bless and protect Jacob, He let him learn a very valuable lesson in honesty.
10. How did Jacob repent of his past attitude and conduct? Genesis 32:1-5 & Genesis 32:9-13.
11. How did God respond to his prayer? Genesis 32:24-30.
Note: Jacob was now spiritually ready to carry out God’s plan for a righteous nation.
