Preview: An in-depth study of the fruits of the spirit. This is the second lesson in a thirteen-part series on this subject.

Scripture Reading: I John 4:8-21.

Memory Verse: I John 3:24.

1. What part does godly love play in our membership in the Body of Christ according to the foregoing Scriptures?
2. What is the first spiritual fruit produced on the tree of life? Galatians 5:22 & Ephesians 4:1-2.
3. How does the fruit of love relate to the gifts of the spirit? I Corinthians 12:31, I Corinthians 13:1-8 & I Corinthians 13:13.
Note: The gifts of the spirit are imperative to the Body of Christ, but, unless we bear the fruit of the spirit, the gifts are useless. All of God’s Commandments hang on our love for God and man (Matthew 22:35-40), therefore, the fruit of godly love is the most essential characteristic of the Christian life.
4. Is knowledge useless without the spirit of love? I Corinthians 8:1-3 & Colossians 2:1-3.
5. How must love be manifested? James 1:25 & James 2:8-10.
Note: Until we put love into action to meet the needs of others, we do not have the spirit of charity. We are a transgressor of God’s Royal Law.
6. What is the supreme test of love? John 3:16, John 15:12-14, Romans 5:6-8 & I John 3:16.
7. Must this love be extended beyond our family, friends, and brethren in Christ? Matthew 5:44-48, Romans 12:14 & Romans 12:17-21.
Note: A child of God must be willing to live or die in the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus who lives in the heart of the believer.
8. Are our acts of charity motivated by a desire for vain glory when Christ is not in us? Philippians 2:1-3.
9. Is love an indication of our salvation? I John 2:3-10, John 13:34-35 & Colossians 3:1-14.
10. How does love fulfill the Royal Law? Matthew 22:35-40, Romans 13:8-10 & I Timothy 1:5-10.
Note: Since the Law was made for the unrighteous, those who have been born again and love the Lord with all of their being and their neighbor as themselves are no longer under condemnation of the Law. They have no problem obeying the other Commandments when they live and act in godly love. They have truly fulfilled the Law.
