Did the Apostles Teach Men to Keep Sunday?

Preview: A look at Sabbath keeping by the apostles. As the chosen of Christ to continue His work after His resurrection, it is imperative that we follow their example.


Scripture Reading: Acts 18:1-4.

Memory Verse: II John 1:6.

1. What time did Paul end his sermon when the disciples assembled for a meal on the first day of the week? Acts 20:7.
2. Where did they assemble for the feast? Acts 20:8.
3. What happened to Eutychus while Paul was preaching? Acts 20:9.
4. What miracle took place among the assembly? Acts 20:10.
5. What did Paul do after the miracle was performed? How long did he remain with the assembly? Acts 20:11.
Note: Paul’s sermon ended at midnight. They ate the meal after the miracle and talked until daybreak. False teachers use this story in their effort to prove that the Holy Communion should always be served on the first day of the week. What would their answer be to the following questions: 1) Should the communion always be served on the third floor of a building? 2) Should a sermon that ends at midnight always precede the communion? 3) Should a miracle take place among the assembly before the communion is served? 4) Should the assembly remain together until daybreak? The answer is “yes” to all of these questions if the 20th chapter of Acts gives us a command to take communion on Sunday.
6. What did the disciples at Antioch propose to do for the poor Christians in Jerusalem? Acts 11:27-30.
7. Did Paul ask the Church at Corinth to make a collection for the same cause? I Corinthians 16:1-4.
8. What advice was given to Paul and Barnabas before they departed from James, Cephas, and John? Was the advice contrary to Paul’s desire? Galatians 2:9-10.
Note: “Remember the poor” was the message to the Churches at Antioch, Corinth, and Galatia. It was not “Remember the first day of the week” as false teachers would have us believe. Paul did not attempt to change the fourth Commandment in God’s Holy Law.
