Jesus Calls His Apostles

Preview: This lesson covers the reason Jesus chose the number and types of men He did to be His apostles and carry on His work. 


Scripture Reading: Luke 5:1-11.

1. How many apostles did Jesus call and who were they? Luke 6:12-16. 
2. For what purpose did Jesus call His apostles? Mark 3:14-15. 
3. Who did Jesus call on to follow him? Were they lazy or unemployed? Mark 1:16-20. 
4. How did the apostles respond to Jesus' request? Mark 1:18-20 & Luke 5:11. 
Note: Jesus called individuals but He called them to be a fellowship devoted to a common cause. This is the fundamental meaning of the Church. The followers of Christ are not just individual learners or servants. They are units in a fellowship. 
5. Along with power and authority, what instructions did Jesus give the apostles while on their tour of duty? Luke 9:1-6. 
6. Why were twelve apostles chosen? Matthew 19:28 & James 1:1. 
7. How long did Jesus pray before making His announcement of the twelve? Luke 6:12-13. 
Note: Luke says that Jesus spent the night in prayer before making His announcement of the twelve. His select group was a diverse lot. They were fishermen, farmers, tax collectors, and political radicals. He called them apostles and this distinguished them from the disciples. There were many disciples, or learners, but Jesus chose twelve who were to be “appointed representatives.” This designation made them leaders in the movement.
