Confession and Forgiveness

Preview: A lesson on the absolute necessity of acknowledging our wrongdoings with sincere regret so that we may earn our salvation.


Scripture Reading: Psalm 51:1-15.

Memory Verse: Psalm 51:17.

1. Discuss confession and forgiveness as recorded in the Scripture Reading and Memory Verse.
2. Who is guilty of sin? Romans 3:23 & Romans 5:12.
Note: David declared that he was born in sin. So were we all.
3. What is said of those who deny that they have ever sinned? I John 1:8 & I John 1:10.
4. What has God promised to do for all who will confess and forsake their sin? I John 1:9, Psalm 32:5-6 & Proverbs 28:13-14.
5. What is the only hope for the wicked? Ezekiel 18:27-32.
6. Who alone can forgive, heal, and cleanse us? II Chronicles 7:14 & I John 2:1-2.
Note: God cannot forgive unconfessed and unforsaken sin, and without forgiveness we cannot be saved.
7. Is it God’s desire that we repent and seek forgiveness? Psalm 86:3-7 & Isaiah 1:16-20.
8. How was it made possible for our sins to be forgiven? Isaiah 53:12, John 1:29 & John 3:16-18.
9. How was this accomplished? II Corinthians 5:14-15, II Corinthians 5:17-21, I Peter 2:24 & Isaiah 53:4-6.
Note: How can we refuse salvation knowing we have been bought by the precious blood of Jesus?
10. What was David’s great sin? II Samuel 12:7-12.
11. What did God do when David repented? II Samuel 12:13-14.
Note: Although God does forgive confessed sins we still reap what we have sown. David broke the Commandments of God, and even though God forgave him, the results of his sin never left his family. II Samuel 12:10.
